I'm trying to form a theory that will explain why people seem to prefer certain flavors of The Simpsons over others. To that end, I've got two questions:

How old are you now?

2. Which third of the series--early, middle, or recent--do you most enjoy now? (The early third corresponds roughly to the first three seasons. The middle third includes seasons four through eight. The recent third continues through the present.)

I can't mention my hypothesis, as it may skew the results, but I'll post a short paper here when I've constructed my theory. (It has nothing to do with "older people will like older seasons.") Note that it does not matter if you have or have not watched The Simpsons ever since it came on the air, or if you missed seasons in the past and only saw those episodes later on.

As a sample answer to my own survey: I am 19, and I prefer the middle third of the series.

I am 45 and I prefer the first two thirds. Being 45 means I remember some of the references on the Simpsons when they originally happened,and don't recognize at all some of the more recent ones.

Do you remember the THOH episode where the monster tore the wheel off of the school bus? I remember seeing the Twilight Zone episode that it was based on back in the 1960s. And the THOH episode based on the Twilight Zone episode that starred Billy Mumy. And all the references to Stanley Kubrick and Johnny Quest and Star Trek whatnot. I saw those things when they were originally shown, 30 - 40 years ago.

As for the more recent references, like the various Boy Bands and what not, all I have to say is: What in the hell are you talking about!?

I'm starting to see the original poster's hypothesis here, but I don't think there's enough people over 30 or under 16 here to really prove anything.

Roughly the "middle", although I can't tell you exactly which seasons. There are episodes that I hated the first time around that I like when I see them again in syndication years later.

Also, it's hard to group the seasons like that. Chronologically it would be more equal to do 1-4, 5-8, 9-12. If you picked your boundaries for stylistic reasons, then you could write a whole paper about that topic alone.
