'Simpsons' Creator Wins Cartooning Award

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Matt Groening, the creator of "The Simpsons," received the top award from the National Cartoonists Society this weekend.

Groening won the Reuben award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year Saturday (May 24) at the society's annual awards ceremony, the AP reports. The award is named after Rube Goldberg, the first president of the society.

Also nominated for cartoonist of the year were comic-strip artists Pat Brady ("Rose Is Rose" ), Greg Evans ("Luann" ) and Dan Piraro ("Bizarro" ). Among the other awards, Darby Conley won in the newspaper comic-strip division for his "Get Fuzzy."

Groening created the comic "Life in Hell," which appears in alternative newspapers across the country, before going on to "The Simpsons." The cartoon started as a series of shorts on "The Tracey Ullman Show" before becoming its own series.

"The Simpsons" just finished its 14th season on FOX and has been renewed for two more years.

Groening also co-created "Futurama."

Piraro should have won. I think the award was "Cartoonist of the Year," or something like that. What has Matt Groening done this year that was so great besides collecting Simpsons royalties?

That is too funny! I just posted an interview with Conley (it's long like a Rolling Stone interview) and I talked with him about how his company chose Rose Is Rose over Calvin and Hobbes!

Well, at least Casali (Love Is...) didn't get nominated.

That is a wonderful interview. I haven't read many interviews of comic strip writers (comic strippers?). Get Fuzzy is one of my favorite strips. I'm ambivalent about this movie, though. I don't like hearing voices for characters I haven't picture voices for. But the idea for the movie sounds interesting and it seems better than having a regular TV show. I hate the Dilbert show, as the dry, visually spare nature of the strip is better suited to the style of humor than the bombastic cartoon show.

I've always sort of pictured Satchel as having an Alf-like voice, particularly when he laughs.

After the interview, I was re-reading some older Get Fuzzy strips and there was one where Satchel said a line that was directly from Winnie The Pooh. Something like "Oh bother."

It was chilling. ;-)

Now I remember. He said "I have a rumbly in my tumbly."
