"The Lastest Gun in the West" Tarzan Ref

I just want to mention that Homer's "Tarzan" reference could have actually been referencing Phil Collins himself and not the fact that "Tarzan" was shown on ABC at the same time as OFF.

Homer says "Aw, do we have to watch this 'Tarzan' movie again?" Lisa says "Dad! This is a documentary on the homeless!"

Anybody who knows about the song "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins will get the joke. The song is used in alot of documentaries about the homeless, usually used exclusively by HBO. Not only did Mr. Collins write and preform this song, but he also wrote and preformed the songs in "Tarzan". See? A cross ref to Phil Collins.

Although that works in a round about way, I think everyone is trying too hard on this one. I doubt when they wrote this episode the writers new that Tarzan would be on opposite the simpsons on Sunday, or even if ABC had already put it on the schedule that far back, they couldn't have been assured it wouldn't change and then the joke would fall flat. In fact I think it's just a joke about how dumb homer saw people wearing torn and tattered clothes on TV and thought it was a tarzan movie. And although it's possible he heard Phil Collins music and somehow that made him think Tarzan, the movie he wrote songs for was a cartoon. And even in the simpsons cartoon universe there is a difference between real shows and cartoons.

I thought of that several hours after I wrote that. I didn't remember Ben Stiller being in Reality Bites (and still don't...not saying he wasn't, I just don't remember it, I only saw it once a while back) so that's what was stumping me.

I rented that along with a bunch of friends on the advice that it was "such a great movie" and within 25 minutes, we were playing Super Nintendo for the rest of the afternoon.

We pulled that movie out of the VCR so fast, we didn't even rewind it.

Worst movie, ever.

Pffft. So many people empty their mental bedpans on groups like this that it's a wonder anyone takes much of it seriously. Some of the stuff here is funny enough to make me laugh until I cry; other stuff is ridiculous enough to make me cry until I laugh.
