No, no, no. The episode where Homer and Flanders go to Las Vegas is brilliant. It is surely one of the best displays ever of what makes Homer tick. Indeed, that is why Flanders goes to see Homer in the first place - they are not friends. It is a stunning example of 2 sides to Homer's character, both of which are sadly overlooked:
1. His "live for today, the devil may care about tomorrow" attitude towards life (just look at the way he is doing his barbeque over the chimney, then slides off the roof), which is the side that Flanders really wants to find out about, and
2. His ability to concoct a scheme, then carry it off brilliantly (in this case, "The Programme". It is also seen when Homer is the Sanitation Commissioner, and many other times besides).
The episode where Maude dies isn't a classic, but I couldn't stand by and let you slander the Las Vegas episode.
That is exactly the episode that many fans (including me) lost their initial interest in The Simpsons. -Ned Farley

Worst episode by far is the one where Lisa gets beat up by a bully and finds that "nerd sweat" is what causes bullying.

Worst episode is probably All Singing All Dancing. Clip shows are bad in general (except for the 138th Episode spectacular, which is a different type of clip show entirely), and I don't like it when regular cast members (Simpsons or townsfolk in any combination) sing songs which don't fit into the plot at all. (A musical exception is Kicking It from the episode where the Simpsons go to New York. But that's different because seeing a Broadway musical is something lots of tourists do when they go to NYC, so it fits just fine into the plot. And, it's one of the funnier songs.) Several otherwise excellent episodes were ruined by this (Wild Barts Can't Be Broken and the episode where Bart worked at the Maison Derriere).
All Singing All Dancing is followed by Saddleshore Galactica -- maybe the horse was a reference to Poochie, but I find the whole 'attitude' thing irritating.
The Sherry Bobbins episode is also quite bad, especially the ending where they gratuitously kill off Sherry.
Kill the Alligator and Run is also awful.
I didn't see New Kids on the Blecch so I can't comment on it. When I saw the announcement that N Sync were going to be on, I decided immediately that I wasn't going to watch the episode. ;-)
"Worst Episode Ever", on the other hand, is one of the better latter-day episodes.

Well, he was right though. I wish I hadn't watched it. I should be able to spot a pointless celebrity episode by now...
Do us all a favor and don't watch The Simpsons at all now. If you can't see the brilliance of an episode like that, you shouldn't claim to be a fan.

I'm surprised you don't like the musicals. I think Alf Clausen is just a real genius, and the musical episodes are my favorites. It's not just that the lyrics are witty -- they are -- but it's the way Clausen can satirize with music the same way the Simpsons does other aspects of life with visual gags and words. Clausen knows just how to imitate the "Broadway" sound or a jazz breakdown and give it that special Simpsons spin. I'm not arguing that you SHOULD like those episodes. I believe what Big Bird taught me: We don't all have to like the same things. But as for myself, I hope we have lots more songs like "Dr. Zaius," "We Do," "Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart," "See My Vest," and, of course, "Cut Every Corner."

this is such a dumb topic. take you pick of almost any episode in the past 3 seasons. every episode in season 12. thought admittedly, maude getting offed was the final straw for me, realized that the simpsons was the same as friends. gotta get those ratings though!!!!

How can you say this?? Vegas was a great episode. You're right about the Death of Maude episode though, also Ned dating this season (bad sitcom material). However none can touch All Singing All Dancing for sheer cringeworthiness.
Does no one remember the Monorail song? I think it's the only song Phil Hartman ever sang, besides Dr. Zaius.
I think the show went down-hill after the episode where Homer became an inventor. There have been few good episodes after that, and I think they killed off Maude because they're running out of ideas. Heck, remember the episode where Krusty said he was quitting the show, and Marge said it was better now than never because long-running shows get boring and repetitive (then Smithers runs in saying Mr. Burns has been shot again)?
But then again I can't blame 'em. The show's been on for twelve seasons, and, I actually feel sorry for them. Maybe Fox will let them down easy, or they'll just give up. Either way, it'll be for the best.
Although it was a pretty bad episode and the way Maude died was rather asinine, I think that anyone's version of this would have been awkward. Any time something so serious as the death of a secondary character who has been on the show for a while appears, it is always awkward. Of course, the writers and producers were put in a bind by Maude's voice quitting. ________________________________________________________________

I thought their entrance was bad (Milhouse: Hey, it's N*SYNC!), but I thought that the episode made good use of them- certainly more so than the token tennis players in "Tennis the Menace." In addition, N*Sync seemed to be very good sports about the whole thing, which I like ("you're stealing my trailer- I like that"), as they're in on the joke.

The verbal introduction to their entrance may have been bad, but the choreographed routine as they entered (and left) was hilarious. Full marks to N*sync for allowing the piss to be taken out of themselves. In 200 years time, university students will be writing whole theses on scenes/episodes like this, and text-books will have page after page of explanatory notes about this whole turn-of-the-millenium "boy-band" thing. I think that the Simpsons will prove to be every bit as important to literature as Shakespeare. The number of contemporary references in each episode is astonishing.
