Actually they weren't watching Lance Murdoch. They were watching Springfield Squares. It was a special from the Springfield Harbor and a tidal wave hit the set. All the others climbed into the top row to except for Old man Charlie who had been in the center square for 30 odd years and wasn't about to move now. The wave hits, Homer says "He's dead now!" and both laugh. The episode was Krusty Gets Kancelled if I remember correctly.
