In the union episode, when they ask "where is the union president", the reponse is something like he hasn't come back since he promised to clean up the union. Next thing we know, we see a football field and a player trips on the field over a body buried presumably.
Jimmy Hoffa, father of the current Teamsters Union president, disappeared in 1975. One of the places in which people guess he was disposed of is the area of New Jersey known as the Meadowlands, where the sports complex was later built.
Little boy who was born after the Internet came into existence, ... the urban legend is that Hoffa is buried underneath Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.
In all fairness to the "little boy," I was born in 1964, and although I've known for years about Hoffa's disappearance, I knew nothing about the football stadium myth until recent years.
Incidentally, you ARE aware that the internet, while only becoming big and popular in the 1990's, actually date back to the 1970's right?

Internet, yes. WWW, no. For the first 20+ years the Internet was only used by Universities and the DOD to connect mainframes and send simple messages. So "Little boy, who was born after the World Wide Web came into existence".

And if you don't know who "Hoffa" is, he was a member of the "Chicago Seven", a group of radical anti-war protestors back in the 1960s. Abbie Hoffa. :-)
Actually... the REAL joke is when the football player trips over the strange mound on the football field. It's really funny... sort of like when Homer's nuclear physics professor dropped all his notes during his lecture.
Obviously somebody wanted to get rid of him after "he promised to clean up the union" and he was killed. That's how I interpreted it. I didn't get the reference to Jimmy Hoffer - but thanks for including that explanation, now I get it on a whole other level :-)
That's the genius of The Simpsons - one thing can be funny for several different reasons.
you guys are all stoopid. the guys at the union killed him becuase he was planning to clean them up. that's why they laugh at the thought of him being alive and well.
*applause* this explanation makes a hell of a lot more sense than "Mr. Burns killed him" It also explains why Carl would mention "unless you're crooked" when Homer asks what this job pays.

BETTER CLUE: Jerry Falwell "outed him" c. 1998. Right after this happened, I was visiting my nieces, and the following conversation ensued:
3 year old niece (3YO): My favorite teletubby is Tinky Winky. 10 year old niece (10YO): Tinky Winky is a boy. 3YO: NO! She's a girl. 10YO: YES! He's a boy. NO, YES, NO, YES, and so on. UNISON: WILL YOU TAKE US TO MOUNT SPLASHMORE!
The last line is a joke, of course. But, my point is that my nieces never heard of Jerry Falwell, and didn't know about the controversy he had just caused by "outing" Tinky Winky, but they were arguing about it anyway.
good point. you ever seen that show? babies in the sky, magical winds that conjure up broadcasts, watching television in your friend's stomach . . . you need to drop some acid before that shit makes sense. and why do they show the bit in the middle twice? "again again!" why????
