I just saw the "Behind the Laughter" episode, and they clearly say that The Simpsons are a northern kentucky family. Also, isn't there a Shelbyville in Kentucky too?

1. One time, Smithers was black! 2. Lenny -> white, Carl -> black! 3. I think Shelbyville and Springfield are closer together. That map is not to scale. 4. You can get there pretty easily from Bakersfield! 5. Finally, a link I can follow at work without running the risk of being fired. 6. The ocean is nearby, the squid gutting district, etc.

If you had paid very close attention to that scene, you would have heard that it was NOT clearly said that they are a Northern Kentucky family. Rather it was stated such that they were *described* as a Northern Kentucky family.

It means that they are from Northern Kentucky, but that the show takes place somewhere else. And it is worded that way so that we will continue to argue about it.

Xino has a habit of driving WIDE LOAD trucks through subtle distinctions, and then not understanding obvious references to recent popular culture or history.

OK, now that we've got that settled, may I continue to pull teeth? At least, I don't see the distinction in the context of this particular line, since it's not like the line was "...for this family that's like people from North Kentucky." I also don't see this taking the shape of the "The family is actually from KY but the characters are from Anystate" explanation. Well, your very premise is faulty... Until I get a better idea of what you actually meant, I can't really state my opinion. The other day I was looking at some of the OOLLLLD posts from the early Usenet which Google will show you - some going back to the 80's. Anyway, as I saw the thread devolve, I got to wondering how far back Xino's posts went. The example I posted was one of the earliest I found, and I thought it funny that you would be a part of that thread.

On a slightly less "topical" note - (have you noticed that *nothing* on alt.tv.simpsons is really *off topic*?) - I've always loved the tenor of this NG. I love the way that people actually engage and make fun of spam, rather than vainly protesting it. (And I know it's not really possible, but doesn't it seem like there's *less spam* for it?) I even like the "DENTAL PLAN" ~ "LISA NEEDS BRACES" perpetual post machines (well, up toa a point).

Well I don't have any beef you, just don't pick on me everytime I try to be myself and talk about The Simpsons here. Judging from the private email I've received there are plenty of lurkers who are interested in the details and over-analyzing. NO need to give me a hard time for discussing The Simpsons on a group named "alt.tv.simpsons".

That's just where the actors come from. Where the actual characters live is still in doubt.
