I have to admit that there in strong evidence that Smithers is homosexual, but does Smithers really love Mr, Burns or is Burns all he's got for companionship? It just seems to this viewer that Smithers is a lonely man. We've seen no evidence that Smithers has a life outside of caring for Mr. Burns.
In "Homer the Smithers", Burns has to order Smither's to take a vacation.

Also, in Homer's Phobia, Smithers runs into John eating with the Simpsons at a restaurant. We discover that John broke plans with Smithers. Not only that, but Smithers was out at a restaurant.
Furthermore, he seems to turn up whenever a Village People song is played. He must be out and about a fair bit. ;)
