just saw this episode, and noted in the credits Guest Voice: Tony Blair - sure the PM himself wouldn't do this?

The only simpsons guest characters they haven't had the real-life people do the voice for are politicians like Bill Clinton or George Bush (Snr) (though very good soundalikes!).

and yet they get Prime Minister Blair to do a guest voice? They certainly didn't get HRH Elizabeth II to do HER voice!

Another thing they do a better british accent than australian - for american actors doing cartoon voices..

Are you mad? It was the usual Dick Van Dyke and Queen soundalikes. American dialogue coaches know of no other British accent or dialect.

The thing is, if the Americans watched an episode of 'Last of the Summer Wine', they'd think the characters were speaking Bulgarian, or something.

And yet 'The Full Monty' was quite successful, despite the thick Sheffield accents. Billy Connolly and Sean Connery are accepted and understandable, even with the burr.

Though I remember reading that when they showed 'Coronation Street' on PBS, it had English subtitles. :)

I'd say it sums up television and the media and the coasts, not America in general. They can't even get a U.S. Southern accent right, so I doubt there's any hope for a British accent.
