Foul Play is a 1977 film starring Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. The film involves a librarian (played by Goldie Hawn) who gets involved in international espionage after she receives a microfilm cassette from a dying agent. Being tailed by an albino and a dwarf, she gets help from a detective (played by Chevy Chase), and not only turn the tables on her pursuers, but also attempt an assassination attempt on the Pope.

Crown Books was once one of the biggest bookstore chains in the United States, with the store's success coming from it selling its books at discount prices (instead of full price at other book stores). However, as the 21st Century approached, tough times hit the franchise, with the store filling for bankruptcy in 1998 and 2001.

Lord of the Rings specifically the last two: Bart and Lisa fighting barbarians with primitive artillery, somebody flies over the castle on a dragon, etc.

The Crown Books reference creeped me out but good because I used to haunt Crown stores when I was a kid and when I first moved to San Francisco. They seemed to disappear overnight and I wondered what on earth had become of them.

Another thing that hurt Crown: the expansion of Barnes & Noble nationwide (before then, Crown was pretty much the only place to buy bestsellers at 30% discount). However, Crown tended to specialize in bestsellers and overstocks (I used to buy two-year-old Fodor's travel guides there for $2-3 each), and didn't have quite the selection that other stores had. (If there's a Book Warehouse still open near you (I was told a lot of them closed at the end of 2006), Crown had pretty much the same selection.)

But was Crown nationwide?
