THOH XIV Review

Homer as Death: Complete rip off of Family Guy episode. I really hope they were doing this to be ironic for all that was stolen from The Simpsons. Not that funny as Family Guy did most of the same jokes the first time around....C-

Professor Frink and Father: Jerry Lewis in this same role as Professor Frinks father could have been made into an entire normal episode. Mildly clever, a few laughs....C+

Clockstoppers: I laughed throughout this one. I think this was up there with any of the Halloween mini episodes. Creative and laugh out loud funny....A-

Can't wait till the normal episodes start next week, looks promising with the return of Homer's mom!

Finally something I can agree about.

it was the overall premise that was copied, lead male taking over for death and taking advantage of it, thats pretty much the same thing.

What could have been made a normal episode is Jerry Lewis acting as Professor Frinks long lost father, ala Austin Powers 3. I think there would have been some quality milage for an episode there (though similar to Krusty's long lost father potentially).

I liked this one, only one that made me crack up.

The premise wasn't original to Family Guy. The idea of someone killing Death and taking on the role was the basis of Piers Anthony's novel "On a Pale Horse", published about 20 years ago. I don't know if there are earlier examples.

I liked the Clockstoppers spoof the best. Reefer Madness was decent; Frinkenstein was weak. None of the segments had a truly eerie feeling like some of the older THOHs.

Anyone else notice that Maggie Roswell voiced Elizabeth Hoover, Lisa's teacher, for the first time in years?(Marcia Mitzman Gaven has voiced Hoover the few times she has spoken in the last three or four seasons.)

Maggie came back for last year's TOH and has resumed her previous characters throughout season 14 - still as an Also Starring, though I thought it would have been appropriate to have her as a Special Guest Voice for at least DABF19.

Just like the ToH story from early on that was a take-off of the TZ episode "To Serve Man." I never saw that TZ episode until a couple of years ago and didn't get the joke until then.

Clockstoppers was good, but it could have been great with a little more effort.

There was also a Duck Tales episode with a similar premise. I didn't see Clockstoppers, but based on the commercials, it looked like it actually used an explanation that the Duck Tales episode also did: time doesn't REALLY stop, but the people using the watch move so quickly that it appears as if it did. I don't know whether the Twilight Zone episode used the same idea, since I haven't seen it, but the Simpsons episode apparently didn't.

There was also an episode like that on Wild Wild West, except that WWW did it better. People were in danger from overheating due to air friction and when they moved something it hung in space because it was falling at a normal rate.

I don't have a lot of recollections of Wild Wild West. But I'm glad to see that there was someone didn't require me to specify "which Star Trek". There can only be on real Star Trek, and all the rest require clarifiers.
