I'm surprised Apu wouldn't let Marge buy very much when she was in the Kwik-E-Mart.

If I were Apu, I would have let her buy anything that was priced $18.95. Of course, I would have marked up everything in the store to $18.95 each...

But "Frontier House", which was actually done by PBS as opposed to 1900 and 1940 Houses that were from England and merely aired on PBS, was slightly different, because they were out homesteading and a lot of the common things were not available. I think they did do some catalog shopping, which of course was a common thing in rural areas for a long time (and is still common today with all those LL Bean catalogs). However, they also had a local shopkeeper, though what was available was limited, often to locally produced goods if I recall.
