I must wholeheartedly agree - writing Barney's essential character out of the show by turning him into a 'recovering alcoholic' was one of their few poor choices. I was in fact recently articulating this position to a friend of mine who is also a die-hard Simpsons fan, and for them to now offer this relapse in the form of a gag revolving around Lisa's spelling Bee was a marvelous return to form.
