Anyone notice that not only did the begining of the episode have nothing to do with the rest of it (as is standard fare now) but the writers forgot about it half-way through! The entire opening depicts the destruction of forests, acid rain, and thick air pollution, minutes later the Simpsons' are camping out in a lush forest with pristine skies.

Well that's what got the Simpsons to stay in and play Monopoly and so on and so on.
There was continunity, and it was a good, but not great episode, especially Moe with the knives.
Man, tonight's episode really made no sense. First off, like it's been said, they mention and then forget the acid rain/republican aspect. Then you move on to the monopoly game, then the damn social worker! Of course, they bring the Vegas hussies. See, I was right... some plots show up again. Like Red Blazer Reality. Of course it's not implemented well...
i am curious. what episodes are particularly strong in the simpson's series? i want to see where you are coming from. . .

My theory is that this kind of composition allows them to advertise the show differently when they decide to rerun it. Every Simpsons commercial I saw this week was about the acid rain. Next time it could be about Monopoly. This tricks people into thinking a new episode is coming their way. They've done this many times before. It is a bit deceitful, don't you think?

I never considered that the disjointed story lines could be for marketing purposes. You may be on to something.
I thought the first two-thirds of it were great -- decent plot, and a lot of funny lines. The last third, with Homer's and Ned's wives from Las Vegas, seemed to come out of nowhere.
The whole "social workers visit the Simpsons" plot had already been done in "Home Sweet Diddly Home" -- a much funnier episode, IMHO.
