Notes for JABF10 (Marge Gamer)

This episode has its ups and downs but overall wasn't bad. The online RPG plot seems to be making the rounds*, but I liked the approach in this episode, and the Marge/Bart bonding had some positive shades of GABF20. Actually, many times while we were inside the game, it felt like a three-part-storytime episode we get about once a year, which could explain some of the appeal. The Homer and Lisa plot got off to a pretty bad start (hooray for buffoonery and barfing!), but picked up once the referee/fairness dynamic came in. The ending/simultaneous resolution of both plots was about as good as could be expected, even if the eventual effects of Earthland Realms on Marge and Bart was a little obvious. (*In October 2006, South Park gave us a somewhat similar "Make Love, Not Warcraft"; in November, we saw American Dad's "Dungeons and Wagons")

DYN: ...Apu, despite being vegetarian IRL, eats the Skinner-turkey? ...Dolph as a cyclops has a Leela-esque eye, as opposed to a normal width?

Goof: The soccer balls are consistently animated as being entirely made of hexagons (the black parts should be pentagonal of course).

Other notes -earthlandrealms.com is not a Simpsons-themed site (like whatbadgerseat.com from BABF20), but it does appear to have been bought for resale. -Randy Quaid was born on October 1, 1950; presumably Marge meant just that her birthday was 10/1, since even when the show began, she'd have been born after 1950. -Assuming the title is a pun of some sort, I don't get it; does anyone else? -There was absolutely nothing special about the credits, but Fox ran them in full anyhow! (Yet look what we got for HABF18 and HABF15 earlier this season...)

I wouldn't call it detailed (have you seen Benjamin Robinson's reviews?), for one thing, but actually, if I'd thought to go back and look at Marge's Google search, I'd probably have spouted off the same info about 5F06, 2F08, and Braniff's South Park connection that Don Del Grande did with ease (maybe not as quickly for the FABF13/HABF22 references, and definitely not the research on Lt. As for the rest, the DYNs, goofs, and most of the previous episode references are things I jot down on my computer as I watch; most of the time I can easily remember what episodes similar moments are in (the production codes are almost second nature to me now), but in this case, the only one I had to look up because it was too vague was 2F19. Also, -Earthlandrealms.com I just typed in quickly (fortunately it wasn't riddled with spyware like one Don checked!) -If you know titles or can pick them out of a set date range, epguides.com is a great resource for airdates.

How do production codes become second nature; are you a hardcore Simpsons collector?

When you put together these submissions, (like this one in 23 minutes); is this the totality of previous Simpsons episode references? If someone were to check every possible reference to an episode; do you always cover them all? Do you ever go back and add more episode refs at another post time?

It's just that 23 minutes, considering all of the typing, surfing and freeze frame work seems incredibly fast.

Since it's the most popular way to refer to Simpsons episodes, over the years I picked up many, but I also had taken close looks at them once and found them to be very useful as an indexing set to recite all the actual episodes as well, so now it's something I try to be sure I remember for newer episodes, and practice occasionally on the old ones. Futurama is the only other show whose production codes I know totally, for various reasons.

But let me also mention (off the topic of production codes now) that I'm still a relatively recent comer, only really getting into the show after it was on the air for over a decade, and not using this newsgroup till season 13. Many of the original a.t.s old-timers had gone by then, and mainly the aforementioned Benjamin and Don are left (but for example, it looks like Joe Klemm has been posting capsule submissions since season 8). You can see their posts for yourself, or look at who gets credited a lot in various capsules on SNPP.

Oh, certainly not. Everyone tends to post whatever comes to mind, but I doubt there could really be a full list of every reference or similarity. The typical route for late submissions seems to be sending them to snpp's capsub address, but with the capsules themselves being a bit behind...
