Another "up yours" to the fans

After someone mentioned the "up your to the fans" from the producers of The Simpsons, I have noticed one or two more.

The original post was about "Saddlesore Galactica", when CBG says: "Excuse me, but I believe the Simpsons already had a horse..." etc etc, basically ridiculing. all the people who post on this newsgroup, who complain about continuity.

I noticed some more in recent episodes:

"King of the Hill" Homer: "Maggie doesn't seem to be growing at all!" -- about complaints that Homer and Mr Burns have aged, but all the other characters have not.

"New Kids OnThe Blecch" Homer: (in response to a thirty-eight year old runner) "Thirty-eight? That's approximately my age!" -- Up yours to the comments that Homer has aged two or three years, while other characters have not aged at all. Also, Homer keeps switching from 38 years to 39, and back to 38 again.

"Simpsons Safari" Bart: "I think we should check her work before completely condemning her." (pause and stares from other family members) "I haven't said anything for a while. -- Major characters are being written out of entire episodes.

[examples snipped]

I'm more inclined to list those examples as Meta references than actual "Up yours" to the fans.

You may want to check the Meta References list on www.snpp.com @ <http://www.snpp.com/guides/meta.html>

Totally. They're light-hearted jokes that only long time fans would get. If anything they are gifts from the writers.

Yeah, the writers are trying very hard to improve the level of quality.

"We're upping our standards, so up yours."

Seriously, tho', I'm inclined to agree with you. Those gags are there for the benefit of the people who would know what they are about. Of course "Saddlesore" still sucked.

p.s. Did anyone know Lovey Howell's first name was "Eunice"?

Oh, be nice. :) I'm pretty sure the original poster's intent is to merely contribute information. Finding [insert topic here] references can be a fun exercise, but tend to, at least in the past, go overboard. :-)

The whole character of Comic Book Store Guy is an "up yours" to this NG.

There are times at which I sing the theme song to "Perfect Strangers" in my head, but at the end it always, without fail, turns into the ending to the theme from "Silver Spoons."

How is that "up yours" to the fans?

I was pointing out instances where the writers have (intentionally) included jokes which basically say I don't care what you thnk about [insert complaint here] -- eg Homer's "That's approximately my age!"

Oh no! Did I fail to regurgitate your post back to you word for word?

It *is* an "up yours to the fans": it's saying that the fans are nerds. It *isn't* explicitly a reference to fan complaints about show *continuity*, as you were listing, but then, I'm not you, so it's not the end of the world if I list an "up yours to the fans" that lies outside your parameters. Besides, you didn't say we couldn't list things that weren't references specifically to fan complaints about continuity; you just asked for instances of "up yours to the fans." My addition meets that requirement.

In the episode where Homer wore the virtual reality suit and made the dog walk on the tv screen he left work in the middle of the day. Carl said: "Does he still work here?" In other episodes Bart and Marge have questioned whether or not Homer should be at work. And, in the "Worst Episode Ever", Bart and Milhouse made some reference to the fact that they didn't go to school while they were running CBG's store.

Why would we want them to age, the power of cartoon.

Maybe the characters switch back and forth depending on what part of the year it is.

Assuming the situation, Bart probably fell out of place and the stab was that some people can't say or do something without departing from character. After all, would Marge and Lisa root through trash on garbage night? Probably not.

TimJack Of Spades

Up yours, children!

Anyway, the best one of these, by far, IMO, was from an earlier episode (not a huge surprise). In "Homer Loves Flanders", at the end, when Homer says "get lost Flanders"

I agree with Jack. There's no need to age the characters--that was all done in the past via flashforward/flashback/dreams, and it was done well.

I agree with everyone else that these aren't an "up yours" to the fans, but there was another one in Trilogy of Error that I'm surprised you didn't mention. At the end, the monkey chauffeur says something along the lines of "The plot made no sense! Tell the people!" I thought it was kind of funny.
