I appreciate the added screentime for the Comic Book Guy and some other good side characters, but the Simpsons really needs another lawyer around like Lionel Hutz. I don't think Troy McClure could be replaced though. Such a damn waste.

well, gil did fill that spot in Sweets and Sour Marge, and as per the preview for next week's season finale, it looks like gil will once again be representing homer, no doubt with hilarious consequences. i don't know about all of you, but i'm looking forward to that. i love gil (and glenngarry glenn ross is one of my fav movies ever). i also miss lionel hutz (and troy mcclure) deeply, though ...

I really like Gil, too, and I hope we see more of him. Of course, no one will ever replace Lionel Hutz, but Gil is a worthy successor.
Gil is my least favorite character who has ever appeared on the show. Lionel Hutz was one of the funniest.

Screw all that... Gil is tres' cool. GGR is a legendary flick and Gil totally stands in for about three of the parts in that film. It adds a funny flavor to the Simpsons episodes he's in... when done well. (i.e. Coleco, Red Blazer, Springfield Shopper, Car Dealership)

Gil is in the same category as the sarcastic guy: they're both abstractions (desperation, sarcasm) not characters. That's OK, but if you make them fleshed-out characters, they can't perform their function of walk-on gag. Troy McClure was always more than just a symbol of vanity.
Troy can't be replaced. Gil can. And who in their right mind would support a character in comedy just because he was ripped off from a depressing movie? Next, they'll have a character named Nicky Bay, a cardboard con-man who looks and sounds like Ricky Jay."
