I overheard a news blurb on the TV that said something to the effect: "If the voice actors don't agree to return to the studio by early May, the show will be cancelled and Fox won't budge on their position."
Has anyone heard anything similar, or am I just hearing things?

Something similar happened with "Friends" a few years ago, during one of their infamous contract negotiations. NBC had made its final offer, and the group was still holding out. NBC actually prepared an advertisement announcing the season finale as the last episode of the series, and the actors finally agreed to the deal.
I'm sure there is some truth to that news blurb. The show has slipped in the ratings this year. Fox knows that the end is coming, whether it's now or in a season or two. They are not going to break the bank to secure the actors' services, and they are not going to set a precedent by giving them a piece of the profits.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this whole thing isn't some sort of set-up to give them an excuse to make fewer episodes in the next season or two so they can make the planned movie at the same time. There's no way they can do any real work on the movie if they're working on getting 22 episodes out in a season.
