More like part of Moe's shtick all along. Remember when he was stealing a whale? Moe's got these little crimes and con games and whatever going on, and they rarely explain the specifics; he's just somewhere doing something sneaky, and the main plot runs into him.

Except, those can always be explained as 'shady dealings".

There is higher level of vagueness to Moe and Barney being in the Simpson's house, and dressed up like they were.

Yes. The extension of the stuff in the backroom would have Moe and Barney, dressed as they were, doing something in the Simpson's house, like running an illegal gambling joint, or I suppose even wild sex games. Then at least we'd know they were doing something.

The way we saw it, it's more like Moe opening the door to the backroom and saying "Clear out now, the cops are coming" but we never see who he is talking to, or what they are doing back there.

It's a method of humor; the idea is to let the viewer use their imagination as to why Barney and Moe are (or have to) be a maid and butler. (For example; they might have lost a bet.) Sometimes things are funnier if you don't actually show the reasons behind them.

Nothing needed to be explained in the ep or in the future.
