Did they ever give a name for the Burly man? A friend of mine thought they called him Bernie

Perhaps you're thinking of Barney Gumbel, whom Homer got to play the Burly man as part of the joke - that's not the real one (there's not really a real one), but he appeared in person and you mentioned your friend thought it was "Bernie" so that might be why.
