No, there is a hierarchy. Hobos travel around, but they work, obviously of the kind that is temporary and short term. Tramps just travel around, and sponge off people. I'm not sure where bums fit in.
Hobos most likely didn't have homes, but I don't think you can categorize them as the sort of homeless you see today. The term fits a certain time period, definitely the thirties when so many were forced off their land, but I believe it was used before that. Nowadays, the only ones that would be called hobos are either old, or have taken up a lifestyle, complete with all the trappings.
You have people doing it now as a "hobby" ie riding the rails, or using some other form of transportation, and dressing the part. There is an annual Hobo Convention, I believe in Idaho, that seems to be a mesh of real hobos (now, getting quite old) and people going for the atmosphere.
Hobos are a subset of migratory workers, but not all migratory workers are hobos. In the early 1900's, there were people who followed the crops, probably freight-hopping to move around, and the IWW got a lot of its members from that segment of the population. Now, people following the crops have cars and other vehicles, and wouldn't be classified as hobos.
As for the guitars, Woody Guthrie the folksinger probably did classify as a hobo at one point. The depression and the dust storm came along, and he had to get out of his small town in Texas (or was it Oklahoma?) and he rode the rails. Initially, he carried paintbrushes, because he'd work at painting signs as he moved from town to town. Later, he'd play music as his work.
And Utah Phillips is a folk singer/storyteller who I don't think was ever a hobo, but sings songs from and about hobos, along with a lot of Wobbly songs. I think he has shown up at that Hobo Convention in Idah.

Hobos are quite similar to tramps. They're basically poor people who travel the country by trying to catch a ride on a train unnoticed. I have no comment on their guitar-playing ability.

I believe the name is derived from "hoe boys." Named for migratory workers during the depression who took advantage of the free transportation provided by the rails, using them to travel from region to region, following the work. You'd have a better chance getting hired if you had your own tools of the trade.

"Hobo" is usually used to describe homeless guys who travel from town to town looking for work, their preferred method of travel being to hide in the boxcars of trains. They used to be more common, well, back when trains were more common.
