Has Homer always worked in Sector 7G? It seems like that is the most consistent Simpson fact outside of their names. Is there some reference that I'm missing? I've been racking my mind trying to think of what movie this may be referenced. Any thoughts?

Homer's in sector 7G because that was the prefix assigned to the first season (7Gxx) - I think that assignment was arbitrary, or at least picked by someone who gave it no significance. (This is mentioned in the season 1 dvd commentaries somewhere.)

This quote is not backed up anywhere that I could see, whereas the commentary obviously comes straight from two of the earliest people to work on the show. Assuming they were assigned a production code before any of the episodes started to get written, and with the first mention of Homer's sector (that I could find) in 7G10, it seems unlikely that it goes that way unless they had come up with that name before the code was even made. (And SNPP wasn't even seen in the shorts.) So maybe the source has it wrong, or maybe he did actually assign the code but didn't quite remember exactly how it happened, or maybe Al Jean, MG, and I are all wrong and it was some huge in-joke wherein James L. Brooks and others came up with a master 7G plan.
So I'm leaning toward code->sector based on the realiability of the sources and that it seems to make more sense that way anyway, but any lurking producers or writers can feel free to shed some light on it.
