French Dubbing

I totally love the French version of The Simpsons, although since I only have cable, I can't see the French version as much as I'd like to (it's really funny to compare the English voices to the French ones). So I was wondering if anybody knew who voiced Sideshow Bob in the French eps..? Well, that's all I've got to say (be thankful). Ta!

My favorite subtiting story just happened to me a few weeks ago. In TV Guide it said that AMC was showing "Battle of Britain" in letterbox format. I videotaped it. When I watched it later, I was humored to discover that there were no subtitles for the German dailogue! The English spoke English, the Poles spoke Polish with English subtitles, and the French spoke French with English subtitles. But no English subtitles for the German dialogue. When the German General said: "If I have to look at one more bomber, you won't get your promotion", I wouldn't have known what he was saying if I hadn't seen the movie about 20 times with subtitles!

I thought they did it rather cleverly here in Qu�bec. In case you don't know, there are two french dubbings of the Simpsons. France makes its own dubbing and we do our own because we couldn't stand their accent. Marge was said to sound particulary awful.

Anyhoo, here in Qu�bec, we played that very card. Since Bart speaks "our" french in the episode, it's the fancy France accent he doesn't understand. Because Qu�bec french is said to be rough compared to France which is sophisticated. So Bart walk up to the cop with our own accent and the cop sounds all snobby. Bart walks away and picks up the "Paris" accent as he mutters to himself.

If something is in another language, you don't dub it. You subtitle it. It's respectful to the original actors and it is closer to the original version.

Although, to be fair, I can understand why they would do it for a program like the Simpsons, where some viewers could be to young to follow the dialogue in subtitles.
