Anybody else notice that in the past few seasons every time a character makes a mistake, they pull the old sight gag: pulling their shirt collar (or pearls in Marge's case) and making the "Ehyeeooo" noise. (spell at own convenience.)
It seems like the writers are trying to create a new "Yoink," but it comes off as forced... and annoying.
Anybody know the original reference? I'm assuming a 1950's TV character?

I think it originates earlier, but I can't quite place it. I want to say Yogi the Bear would do it, but I'm not certain. Fred Flinstone too, but again I'm not sure. Given that those are the strongest that come to mind, I suspect it is a cartoon character, and I suspect a Hanna Barbera one. Maybe it started with one character, and appeared to a lesser extent with others.

Nope, it's definitely a Charles Nelson Reilly shtick... Yogi Bear's collar-pulling line was generally "Sheesh!".
In the dvd commentary for Bart's Comet, the writing staff verify that the collar yank is, in fact, taken from Charles Nelson Reilly.
I always thought it was a Jerry Lewis reference, but I could very easily be wrong. I also find it kind of annoying. It might have been funny once, but now it's overplayed.

I don't know if it originates anywhere specifically. I've always associated it with comic book characters who find themselves in an embarrassing or unpleasant situation, like when they're about to catch it. Pulling the collar down releases the heat build-up underneath the shirt and was sometimes accompanied by a jet of steam (hot air) and a blushing face.
