In all my years of watching the Simpsons, I have never seen the creators stooping to such a low level as in tonight's episode. It presents a totally inaccurate portrayal of the American judicial system. The episode shows Homer getting executed almost immediately after being convicted. In states where the death penalty is a mean of punishment, the condemned stays on death row for an average of 10 years before being executed. The Simpsons' plead of innocence was totally ignored, while Homer's accepting full responsibility for the crime was accepted without question. The incompetent lawyer representing them is enough cause for a retrial to be given. The ending is even worse, it does nothing to assuage the (European) stereotype that the death penalty, as practiced in the United States, is barbaric, and executions treated like carnivals. In its 400-year history, the North American continent have never burned anyone at the stake, and in cases where many innocent people were wrongly accused and hanged (as in the Salem witchcraft trials, where only 20 people died wrongly), the people recognized their mistakes and apologized for it. It is true there are cases of mob lynchings in the United States, but those acts are illegal under the law. Europeans, on the other hand, have at one time in its history, burned 5000 accused "witches" in a single day in one city. During the 1930's, Germans stood idly by while their LEGALLY ELECTED leader systematically committed genocide on entire peoples. Now they're criticizing the United States for having the death penalty, which they consider barbaric. I say shut up, Great Britain (who burned Joan of Arc at the stake), Germany (who committed genocide and denied it), France (who guillotined countess revolutionaries), and let Switzerland criticize us. I know some of you might disagree with me in my view on the death penalty, but the Simpsons' representation of is is totally inaccurate, and would only make the hypocritical Europeans more critical of the death penalty in the US. Besides, 70% of American agree with me. So, as Bart says, Europe, eat my shorts.

Murder is barbaric. Executing murderers is not. You may not share that belief, but my belief is just as valid. If you cannot accept the death penalty, then move to Canada, where general attitudes are more in line with your own.

I didn't get to see the show. I don't think I missed too much. But don't worry, at least us Americans bathe more than Europeans, so we smell better. We may execute criminals, but at least we don't have soccer riots. So rejoice. The Europeans are not any less violent than Americans, they just use their rage at different outlets than Americans.
