What "keeps down the urges"?

I seem to remember Flanders offering something to someone and saying it keeps down the urges. What was it?

Maude: Cornstarch! Ned: Oh, righty-o! It's good for keepin' down the urges!

I doubt it does. I suspect it's either something made up, or the "cornstarch" is a stand-in for saltpeter.

I have no idea how saltpeter is supposed to stop urges, or if it's just myth, but it is a fairly common comment. There was the time my friend Bob Cummings (who was on the first Greenpeace voyage to Amchitka in 1971) mentioned how the morning drink was probably spiked with saltpeter, but then he also noted that it was grape kool-aid we were drinking.

IIRC, saltpeter acts as an anti-Viagra. You may want to, but you can't.

There was a home version of "Win, Lose, or Draw", but you might remember the board game "Pictionary" better.

I always assumed that since Maude got "cornstarch" after Ned drew only 3 dots, they practiced Pictionary a lot because doing so was "good for keeping down the urges."

I thought it was Pictionary, but I thought that was some other game. It's been a while since I've played board games, forgive me! <cries>
