Canada My Ass!

Just some comments from a bitter old man who happens to live in T.O. (Toronto to you damn Yankees).

This ep of "The Simpsons" was eagerly awaited here in the Great White North (land of the Eskimo, home of the igloo, birthplace of Timbits). The entire country (except, of course, Newfoundland and Labrador) was eagerly awaiting OFF venturing north to Toronto.

So, after the first act - no damn Toronto. The second act finishes up - no damn Toronto. The third act - they are in Toronto! Mostly on a non-descript soundstage that could be...anywhere!

Goodness gracious, this ep was as Canadian as lamb curry. When the Simpsons traveled to Australia, it was for most of the show. When the Simpsons traveled to Japan, it was for most of the show. When the Simpsons traveled to Canada, it was about 4.52% of the show. What gives?

Also, the writers for tonight's episode were neither Tim Long (Canadian) nor Joel Cohen (Canadian). I don't know, but it seems to me that if you have a Mongolian on staff, the Mongolian should write the show where the Simpsons travel to, say, Mongolia.

I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore! I say that we here in America, Jr. deserve yet another show which takes place entirely in our home and native land! I say that Jean Chretien get his butt out of Russia and high tail it to L.A.! I say it's time we Canucks fought back!

Oh, I give up. I'm going to take a nap.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

They made a big deal around here about this episode. "The Simpsons are going to Canada!" they said. I was expecting to see more of Canada too, but the episode was still very good.

By what we were hearing on TV, I thought it would be like the Bart vs Australia episode.

I still enjoyed the episode very much, but the Canadians here should not have made such a big deal about their trip to Canada because that wasn't the point of the episode. Some girl falls in love with Bart is what the point of the episode was.

God, I can't believe the number of Canadians complaining about this. It's YOUR fault anyway, for playing up a 30 minute cartoon so much such as the way you're describing it. The Simpsons owes nothing to you, nor to anyone, and the writers will decide what to make the characters do. I mean, you're really hitting the bottom of the barrel when every season you have a "let's go to <insert country> and make fun of them for 30 minutes" episode. When the writers can't come up with anything better to write than that, it's a very bad sign.

Be quiet. I command you. And to the guy in the other thread who was worried by the 'Yankee Doodle' joke, get real. Americans are the biggest jerks in the world. Joe Q. Flagwaver will drive you off the road with a huge Old Glory hitched to the top of his $30,000 SUV, but he will never vote. And should it happen that he doesn't like what another country does, even if it does not affect the United States, he will wish to destroy them. In fact, the most common saying in America is "let's bomb them back to the stone age" or my favorite.. "Let's turn that there middle east into a parking lot"

Americans are nerds.

I can't believe I read the whole thing. Only in America can the Simpsons be truly appreciated--by AMERICANS.

Whoa, pardner! You're saying that us Canadian fans, excited by the prospect of OFF traveling to Toronto, are at fault for the media coverage of last Sunday's ep? Frankly, I think not, Santino Ciofani (if that's your *real* name).

Gosh golly, SC (if those are your *real* initials), I think the writers do owe somebody - the network. If I'm not mistaken, in a capitalistic society, television shows are instruments throught which advertisers "advertise" their wares. If the Simpsons writers wrote whatever the hell they wanted (like a whole episode centered around in-jokes about Joel Cohen's kid's birthday party), the series would die a thousand deaths.

I would have to imagine (and I could be wrong here) that if one of the writers wanted to "decide what to make the characters do" and have Homer dig up and sodomize (look it up) Maude Flanders' corpse, I doubt he/she would be employed very much longer.

Actually, SC, the writers haven't come up with much better for a number of seasons.

Yes...yes, I will obey. My sincere regrets, oh master.

Yup, a country consisting entirely of 280 million nerds. And, by the way, a country that can kick your country's ass any damn time it wants.

With, of course, the help of our Canadian Peace Keepers.

We heard a lot of hype locally too (in the Rockies) and I kept thinking, "Is this the Canada episode? I thought they were going to Canada?" So 25 minutes or so into the show I flipped to the TVListings channel to see what was up, I came back to The Simpsons and suddenly they were in T.O. (???? I missed the reason they went, oh well)

See now that's strange because the propaganda that the media's been feeding around the University of Alberta is that one of the writers of the Toronto Episode is Canadian and attended the U of A. (I was personally looking forward to some Western Canadian in-jokes (slams) against ~the EAST~, but oh well)

They went because Bart's girlfriend went to Canada with her dad, who was filming a movie.

Is that a big thing in Canada, west vs. east? I'd never heard that.

The ep was written by John Frink & Don Payne. The Canadian writers on staff are Joel H. Cohen and Tim Long. Cohen attended U of A.

But your perception sure is correct. The Wednesday before Sunday's episode aired, I went to a Simpsons forum in Toronto which featured Cohen and Long. They had already appeared on the CBC as well as AM Canada so the media was going ga-ga over their presence. Only during the forum did it come out that neither of the two had written the "Toronto" episode.

Hi Marla,

The forum wasn't televised. There was a camera crew there but I think it was more to get a few shots for evening news.

In this newsgroup, on the 13th of February, there is a post entitled "Simpsons Symposium with the Canadian OFF Writers Feb. 13th - a review". A few people that attended (myself included) give their views of the evening.

Take care.
