Halloween epsode

Did I miss something big in a competing timeslot, or wouldn't Halloween have been a good time to run a new Halloween episode?

You missed quite a bit, since this has already been discussed here in at least two threads, and the discussion happens every year.

Most years the regularly scheduled timeslot isn't on Halloween, and I don't blame them for not wanting to run a show in a new timeslot for just one week.

This year, it was on Halloween.

But there's never been a requirement that a holiday special run on the holiday. Indeed, for some holidays there isn't enough space. Regular programs air their holiday episode ahead of time, or at the very least only on the holiday if that's the regular broadcast day.

People have pointed out that if they aired the "Halloween special" last night, baseball or not, much of the viewing audience would not be home to watch, or at the very least would be interrupted as the doorbell rings.

The only issue here is that if you think of it as a Halloween special, then it does seem silly that they air it after Halloween. The fact that Halloween fell on the same night as the Simpsons normally airs means nothing, because realistically if there was no baseball it would have likely aired last Sunday.
