Virginia Woolf reference

Moe's professor's committing suicide by walking into the lake is a reference to the suicide of Virginia Woolf, who committed suicide in much the same way.

it could also be a reference to the novel "the awakening" where the main character, a woman, walks off into the ocean and kills herself.
