In an ep I saw last week (the one where he doesn't go to church) Homer was reading a Playboy and read a joke out loud: "Our unabashed dictionary defines IUD as love springs eternal. I don't get it." Now, I get the refs and all, but I still don't get the joke at the root of the matter. Maybe if I knew what IUD meant, but, no dice. Any help?

Inter Uterine Device. A form of birth control, literally installed in the uterus, which prevents a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall and developing. Once commonly prescribed, but far less common since the Dalcon Shield was found to have produced some rather awful side effects (resulting in some deaths, IIRC) about twenty years ago.
Thusly women have been understandably unwilling to be fitted for them.
And some IUDs were (are?) shaped like springs. So, there ya go.

Actually, an IUD is an intra-uterine device, not inter-uterine. An
inter-uterine device would be a very long two-headed dildo.
-megafrimFirst of all, the joke is "our unabashed dictionary defines IUD as love springs *internal*." The joke being a play on two meanings of "spring" and the coiled shape of IUDs (Intrauterine devices) which are a type of birth control method.

It's a stupid joke and is unfunny. Or is that the joke that the writers were making? My brain is melting.

It's a contraceptive.
it's this lil metal dealy that hangs from the cervix, with arms branching out to hold it in. The idea is by irritating the cervix, you can...oh hell...prevent the embryo from attaching to the uterus?
Apparently I paid a little attention during my sex-ed classes in high school; not much however.
