In a TV interview with the makers of the Simpsons, I distinctly remember someone (Mr Groening?) saying they wanted an expression for Homer to use, like Oliver Hardy used in the Laurel and Hardy films. Hardy said "Doooooooooh", but that used too much valuable celluloid time, so it was shortened to "Doh".
Can anyone here support or counter-claim the 'true' origin of 'Doh' ?

What do you mean by "true"? Your last sentence is sort of confusing... But that is correct as far as any of us know. I don't know if they were going for "an expression for Homer to use," since that implies that they were looking for a catchphrase, but I guess it first showed up (as it always does) as "(ANNOYED GRUNT)" in the script; Dan Castellaneta did the dooooooh, then MG said "great, but faster" (or something like that).

I guess so...that's what Netscape defaults to, and I personally like it...each approach has its own advantages, but if something is really long and I only want to reply to a particular part, I'll do what I'm doing now. Here on a.t.s people do both and no one really complains much.

I don't want to get into a whoel thing (especially since your use of the word "shouldn't" implies very strong feelings on your part), but it might depend on how you read your news. My messages are listed in a hierarchy, and when I read a reply I've usually read what's above it...thus, it leads to less scrolling when something is top-posted. Also, the long messages usually aren't as much of a problem as they used to be, since bandwidth is greater (plus, all the extra junk falls to the bottom when you top-post, so again, wading through extra quoted material isn't as much of a problem). Let's just agree to disagree on this issue, then.
