The Seven Sister Colleges

What are they? I know a couple of them Vasser and Radcliffe

seven colleges, all on the east coast, and all originally women only. some of them - wellsely, bryn mawr, radcliffe, smith, barnard - still are; vassar is now coed. i think that mt. holyoke is the 7th, and i'm not sure if it is coed now or not. actually, i'm not sure about a couple of those schools.

they're all elite schools - hard to get in to, and hard to pay for. as the episode suggests, some of them have sizeable lesbian communities, which isn't surprising. -AM

Well, they were all listed, complete with the stereotypes about them, in Lisa's dream.

They are, obviously, all-women colleges, though I'm not sure what limits them to 7. Some of them have moved to being general colleges, rather than women-only, in the past few decades.

All you have to do is go to a websearch engine, use "seven sister colleges" as the searchwords, and you'll get your details.

Banard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe, Smith, Vassar, and Wellesley. I was once in the student union of the last one, back in 1982.

The term "Seven Sisters Colleges" is apparently a marketing term, from about 1927. They are all Notheastern schools, and by banding together, they could better promote themselves than separately. Apparently it's also sort of used to indicate a set of schools parallel to the Ivy League colleges.
