I like the episode until the end. It's just me, but I never found death funny and it ruins it for me. But everything leading up to it is great. Someone makes observations withing the context of the show that we had noticed from watching it for years!

I disagree. I think the ending sets it apart from other episodes. Granted, it's extremely dark humor, but it's very funny in a twisted sort of way.

I appreciated the direction of the final scene where Homer calls out something in his sleep during the funeral, someone says, "That's our Homer," at which everyone laughs while simultaneously Grimey's coffin is lowered into the grave.

For me it's along the same lines as the scene in Seinfeld when George finds out his fiancee has died. It's extremely dark, but extremely funny.

I didn't "get it" while listening to the actors read the script and, after the reading my girlfriend asked "Are they really going to use that ending?" They did. :-)

It wasn't until many months later, when the episode aired, that I realized that Frank Grimes is a real person that has somehow wondered into "Springfield." Maybe they should have drawn him more realistically (five fingers?) or used the story for a THOH episode to make the idea more obvious. In any case, when a joke has to be explained, it probably doesn't work as well.

Of course, thinking of "Grimey" as a real person makes the ending even more ... excuse the pun ... shocking. But that final joke is so like the bad sitcoms it parodies, that I think it works well.

Wasn't Frank Grimes one of the voice actors on the English version of the "Speed Racer" cartoon?

That's exactly what I got out of it. The real world clashes with the satirical world. "If Homer lived in the real world, he'd be dead by now". "He's got you there, Dad." The episode ends the only way it could; with the man who deserves success killing himself, and lazy Homer breezing over his life lesson with a yawn. Possibly the most sarcastic ending in an episode, ever. I really liked it.
