REVIEW: B-minus - maybe the show has been on too long for an episode
        like this, where you have some idea of how it is going to end
        up, and when they do try a "surprise" ending, it's another one
        of those "show a lot of pictures over some song" endings.

GOOFS / FREEZE FRAME / WHATNOT In the "bad timing" department, a trapeze artist falls with a thud when the catcher is too busy reading the Red Dress Press; this first aired the day after a Ringling Brothers "silks" artist fell to her death (and the show continued - they even brought out clowns to try to draw attention away from it - because "the show must go on").

Cletus can read (that's why Brandine asked him) - he has done it before - but it isn't a goof that he "misread" the skywriting message; he just used the fact that Brandine can't read to his advantage.

Burns already knows how much of a liberal and a conservationist Lisa is; this was the plot of an entire episode.

All I was thinking while watching that scene was that they'd already had horses two times, and certainly the first time the upkeep nearly killed Homer. I was expecting that to come into play this time.

That was clearly conveyed. Skinner was certainly taking in the smell. Indeed, I thought the flashback might actually be that, something brought on from sniffing the ink.

Just an FYI for people outside of Massachusetts who never heard it: several years ago Senator Ted Kennedy was attempting to use a contemporary baseball reference during a campaign appearance, and he referred to two politicians as "the Mike [sic] McGwire and Sammy Sooser [sic] of Massachusetts politics."

They may or may not have been aware of this with the pronunciation of "Liser". (Certainly they wouldn't have had to be. It's a longstanding joke about the accent in some parts of the northeast that you drop the "r"s on the ends of words, and add them in other places, e.g. "pizzer and beah".)

When I saw it, and noticed Skinner in the second cartoon, I just figured it was Bart and his desire to make light of Skinner at every opportunity.

But you're right, editorial cartoonists do often put their "signature" in each of their cartoons. Aislin does it here in Montreal. Who knows why they start doing it, but once it starts, it's like a gimmick one expects.

The shopping bit was kind of reminiscent of other random, nonsensical endings, like in "The Great Money Caper" and "Burns Baby Burns." I didn't think it was that funny, but it didn't bother me either, since they had already resolved the plot. It wasn't a cop-out, just a random add-on.

Maybe he didn't want to risk losing them. It probably isn't that easy to get a hold of dancing, hissing ponies.
