Ok I did research in to my vast Simpsons catalog, in Simpsons books and such it is spelled CARL. And Moe did refer to him once as Carl Carlson/Karl Karlson so that is his last name. In the episode where Homer has it written on his hand however, it is "Lenny = White Karl = Black". So I guess one can assume Homer can't spell, which is not exactly a stretch.

Fifty years ago, there was some freighter named the "Flying Enterprise" that sank. It's been years since I heard the story, so honestly I can't remember what was so important about the event. But your mention of "Carl Carlson" reminded me of the captain of that vessel, Kurt Carlson.
Considering all the other hidden references, this makes me wonder if Carl was given his name as a reference to the Captain. In which case, I would think it's Karl Carlson.

Another subtle connection might be this. I know either Selma or Patty (I can't tell them apart) is a ham radio operator, and I thought there was some other reference to the hobby somewhere in the series. I read about Kurt Carlson 30 years ago, in an amateur radio magazine. I think he was a ham, and ham radio may have had something to do with the emergency. If he wasn't a ham, there was some connection.

I can't believe there have been so many brain cells wasted on this 'controversy'! But of course, I wasted mine too..
Every online listing of an action figure or other piece of Simpson's merchandise that lists the character as Carl Carlson, with two "C"s. The Simpsons trivia game that I have here, with a poster showing 286 characters, shows Carl with a "C' for his picture. Is that enough to end this? Unless we get a screen shot of Carl's drivers license, I don't think there can be more proof than that..

Just checked the episode guide over at The Simpsons Archive to see if we could clear up this Carl/Karl thing. According to the website, "Karl" was Homer's secretary in Simpson and Delilah (7F02). The *other* Carl, you know, "Urban Lenny", has always been Carl with a C as far as I know. I don't recall Homer having spelled it with a K when he wrote it on his hand. Then again, I really didn't pay that much attention so maybe he did.

I watched this episode today, and this post seems to be in complete error. We freeze framed it, and it is Carl with a "C". It says "Lenny = white Carl = Black. So this whole controversy is based on...somebody making up a controversy?
