You ought not mislead foreigners like that, Claire.

A "switch" is actually a Russian three-wheeled potato wagon, often painted in bright festive colors for ease of seeing.

Okay, actually Claire had it pretty much right. Essentially, a whip made from a slender branch. They were used for disciplining children as recently as the early 1900's, I'd say. They sort of fell out of vogue in the '50s, which eventually led to such societal ills as recreational drugs, common use of the word "cool", Nirvana, flavored gelatin, and so forth.
