I just watched "The Telltale Head", and there's a scene missing. It's about 30 seconds long, and it was right before Krusty says "I don't feel like killing anymore." Originally, Bart goes into a speech about taking the statue for granted. I will post a mp3 for those who want to hear what is missing.
One of the reasons I wanted the Simpsons on DVD was so I could replace my homemade videotapes of the show. If the show isn't complete, I'll stick with my videos and forgo the DVDs.

Just for fun, I A/B'ed the original broadcast videotape with the DVD, and the major differences are in the final scene, following the chase reprise in the third act. For one thing, the chase was about 3 seconds shorter the second time through in the original cut.
- The speech you mentioned: in the original broadcast, after Bart says "I await your wrath", he says "But I'd like to add one thing: it wasn't until I removed the head of Jebediah Springfield that we realized we were taking our heritage for granted. That was a crime, too. One I think we are all guilty of." Then Burns and some other townies agree that he has a point, then Bart says "And I know that I'll always feel an inner shame far greater than any punishment you could dish out. Far far greater. Far far FAR far greater." And the crowd goes "Awwww." And THEN we go to Krusty saying he doesn't feel like killing anymore.
- In the the DVD version, the camera pans across the crowd before coming to Burns, who says "I love you, Smithers." The dialogue missing from the original cut: MARVIN MONROE: Look, it's glorious! OTTO: It's beautiful, man! And right before we see Mr. Burns, it's the Sideshow Bob we all know and love, not the fake Sideshow Bob seen on TV with Krusty earlier in the show.
- The final scene is different; in the original, Bart climbs down off the statue into Homer's arms as majestic chimes play on the soundtrack, and he stays there for a while, then we cut to a static long shot of the crowd, credits. In the DVD version, Bart comes down then we quickly cut to a long shot, and Bart and Homer walk across. "Most lynch mobs aren't this nice." No chimes in the soundtrack.
Also, looking at them side-to-side made it obvious how much better the picture is on the DVDs than on a dozen-year-old videotape.

I guess I'm rather lucky that I have this version from the original 1990 airing myself. Kinda liked how Bart goes into using "far" a bit too far.

I kinda felt there was something funny about it myself.
Just for fun, I'm watching a simular tape I've recorded myself of that night. Too bad I never though much to keeping it too intact, cutting some of the commercials here and there, and also taping America's Funniest Home Videos a half hour before the show came on, but it's there.
IMO, it seemed better to have the chase shorter.
This is the version of which I was more familiar with personally. Though I assume Bart's monologue was a tad too long and pointless.
Oddly, is it just me, or is the lip synching a bit off in this episode as well (noticed it around the time when Bart tells the crowd the story was going to take 23 minutes and 5 seconds to complete). Just a thought. I remember reading how some of these episodes had to be re-drawn because the original animators at Klasky-Csupo used to exagerated the lip movements on purpose.
Damn, why did they even have the fake Bob on earlier anyway (always wondered that myself all these years), could the real Bob have been on leave due to the situation?
Oddly I remember seeing the other version when they re-ran this episode around the summer of '90. Unfortunatly, I never did tape the repeats.
Especially if you recorded it at EP mode on a non-HiFi VCR like mine is. I had to use my parent's VCR at the time too.
Heh, wish I kepted these commercials, I think I have one for a local dating service however.

You're RIGHT! It also misses the church bells ringing - I looked into it, and while those scenes seem to be there in syndication, they were listed in the syndication cuts guide as being taken out for the second airing - hopefully this is an oversight on their part (which better be fixed either on subsequent prints or season 2), or else they are not using the first run ones (which means stuff like Pier 1 will be given as Trader Pete's instead - frankly, I'd rather see the original in the episode and the changed version in a special features section)...there are some marked with that notation in season 6 (see www.snpp.com/episodes/scg-6.txt and search for a dollar sign)...those seem to be the only ones (at least those marked with $s)...well, i sure hope they get their act together and encode the FIRST runs...oh boy...that's not good at all

Maybe...but then again, this time they're selling it. I think it's different when something is for sale (consider rated R movies and any sort of porn for example)...so we'll have to see, but I'm hoping for the best.
