Actually, I like the idea of the "Hi, I'm Troy McClure" parts being taken up with gueststar roles. With the exception of the occasional popular music group, real people should be in this role, not in the imaginary world of Springfield.
There are already enough people in the world with a barely tenious grip on reality without further blurring that edge.

I disagree. Troy McClure and his trademark line should be put to rest out of respect. Lionel Hutz must be spinning in his grave.
My recent question about Troy McCLure being based on Dean Jones was responded to with "Troy McClure is based on Doug McClure". Maybe Troy McClure was supposed to be a little Troy Donahue and a little Doug McClure. But some of those movies he was in were so corny I am convinced there is a little Dean Jones in there too. And, if my theory is correct, and since Troy Donahue recently died, THE CURSE IS OUT OF CONTROL.

I do think it could have an advantage, only in the fact that it could stop the gimmicky use of celebrity voices. i mean, some episodes a guest star would just show up in the middle of the episode, say one or two lines, and have no point in the rest of the episode. Like Steve Buscemi in EABF15, where he basically said "hi homer" or something like that. At least a temporary replacement like Gary Busey or Robert Wagner made sense when the gust voiced.
