after thinking about that for a moment, the quote is backwards. i checked the capsule at snpp.com, and it confirms that the quote is "short answer yes with an if, long answer no with a but," which makes more sense if you think about it. i once used that quote as the title to a senior paper in college on what sense, according to buddhist philosophy, do we not have a "self." i.e., ask the question "do i have a self (or "soul" or what have you) and answer using the quote.

well, that was the second hardest i worked on anything in college (the first being my senior thesis on Nonstandard Analysis). anyway, long story short the prof is a good personal friend of mine ("small liberal arts college, call professors by first name") and i just wasn't satisfied - something was missing - and i worked and worked and turned it in 10 days late. it was well worth it. best essay i've ever written. he gave me an A+ (and he's a notoriously difficult grader - he had *never* given me such a grade and i had maybe 5 courses with him), but since it was 10 days late, i ended up getting a B! that's the way he is - totally professional. even though i was a good friend of his and kept him updated on my progress, and he encouraged me to take extra time, alas it was late. i support his decision of course. oh, and he liked the title - he has a young son and they watch the simpsons together (he didn't know the ref, but after i explained it he laughed).
