How do Fox jokes go over worldwide?

I've noticed that the Simpson's somtimes make jokes referring to Fox, the network that they are on...such as Bart saying "We'll sell it to Fox, they'll buy anything!" But does Fox carry The Simpsons in the whole US? What about overseas? Do ppl still get these little jokes? Oh well....any input is appreciated....meaningful input that is.

Sam :o)

Rupert Murdoch is a former aussie and has certainly made his presence known here (Super League, murdering a perfectly good rugby league competition). We get, and love, the Fox jokes.

i watched the simpsons in germany and russia (well, mongolia really but they were in russian) and i know german (i'm an american) and it just wasn't as funny and there was a lot lost in the translation. and i had someone translating the russian ones, and they didn't seem to be coming across like the original english episodes do. they were all old episodes so i knew them well, but it just wasn't funny. and how should russians understand a satire on the typical american family? and all the voices are different, of course, but it really takes away. marge's voice was really low, and you didn't get the funny screetchy stuff. ugh, can't type anymore, injured arm, ahhhhhhhh........!!!

Latin America has its own Fox, though on cable. This Fox has always had mostly crap and The Simpsons. So Fox references tend to be understood as being that version of Fox. They're still funny.

I'm a brit and I get them. Whether or not Fox is crap I acutually don't know, but I can assume it's crap. So it's still funny.

What I wonder is do they show all the episodes in France, because there's a fair bit of mocking them. And when someone speaks a foreign language ie. Russain in Russia do they just leave it as it is?

Well, FOX has grown a lot (and yet, not at all) since its Married... With Children days. It has long been considered a "baby network" because it only broadcasts 2 hours a night, the rest is local feeds. It still has crap (Titus, Temptation Island, remember "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire"?), but it also has some good shows (all of their animated shows, used to have "The Tick", "Bernie Mac", "Malcolm") as well as a contract with the NFL. FOX isn't as afraid to experiment with shows as the Big Three.

In its early days, FOX tried to appeal to black audiences more than any of the other networks were, so you had shows like "Martin" and "Living Single". Although, now, FOX is just trying to get anyone it can to watch. However, I've found that most of the people I know here in Indianapolis don't get the Rupert Murdoch jokes.

I think they should do something with FOXNews or F/X, those networks have absolute CRAP. Although, lately, it seems F/X is just a M*A*S*H rerun station. Every time I turn it on, that's what's on.

Sorry about the length.

they set up first to broadcast in the major cities and sign up affiliates. that's why the black or more politically correct "urban" audience play. "Greg Bair" wrote in message news:[email]...

You're right, I don't get most of those; I just ignore them. I do know that FOX is considered to be a crummy network (From 'Lisa's Wedding' : "FOX turned into a hardcore sex-channel so gradually I didn't even notice!"), though. We have networks like that here too (meaning those who make a living broadcasting "Big Brother" and such), so I guess most of the swipes at FOX are justified.

I just found an amazing new page at SNPP (god bless 'em):

In Finland, where the show is subtitled with the original soundtrack, the Fox jokes are translated as they are. People over here know, or quickly get the idea, that The Simpsons is a Fox show in the States.

Our translator usually doesn't try to localize the jokes, which is a good thing. Only when there's a reference to, say, a celebrity or product name that's not well-known here, she refers to to what a celebrity does instead of his/her name ("magician"), or what the product is ("soda"). Sorry that I can't think of a real example right now, but hope you get the idea.

BTW, I've been given a permission to post a full Master's thesis on translating The Simpsons for the Finnish audicence to The Simpsons Archive. If only I'll find the time to do the HTML work, I'll let you know when it's up.

Geez, it's so true. Did anyone see the "Glutton Bowl" tonight? If you didn't, it's a bunch of fat slobs from middle america slingin' hot dogs down their throats and such. They also eat "raw sticks of butter in 1-2 bites". I only saw the promo, but it was enough. Coming next season: "Who Wants to Marry a Slovenly Glutton?"

i must say i watched the second half (i was on the phone too so i didn't give it my undivided attention). it was awful. i felt nauseas at several points, watching those guys eating the beef tongues. but at one point a really fat guy came out as he was announced and whipped out this big spoon, and i could only think of the chili cookoff episode when homer takes out his chili spoon. Lenny: "they say he carved it himself... from a bigger spoon."

I've actually had Beef Tounge, and it's not that bad. It has a unique texture, kinda like chewy steak, that isn't found anywhere else and it tastes like roast beef.

Trust me, there are faaar worse things than that. Just look at some of the authentic east asian cuisine.

Also, the grossest food I've ever eaten was a cooked chicken heart.
