Please Kill The Show Already

- After watching the season 3 episodes, I just can't stand seeing the show in its current state. They need to just let it die already. I think last season was the only entire season i've ever hated of the show. There wasn't a single episode that stands out. Even in the shows worst years, there would always be a few great episodes in the bunch, but not last year. I'm pretty sure I only laughed once during the entire season at this line...

Homer to Frank Grimes' son "But Frank Grimes wasn't married." Grimes' son "He liked prostitutes... OK??"

- That was the only line i found funny all year compared to still laughing 5-10 times during old Simpsons re-runs I've seen many times over.

It's not great, but I wouldn't say it "blows", and I CERTAINLY wouldn't use a word like "blasphemous." Nothing you said refutes Doug's argument, which I wholeheartedly agree with.

This alone proves that you don't have a clue why the early Simpsons were great.

Frank Grimes was a workaholic, driven by a desire to succeed. He hated Homer because everything seemed to go Homer's way as Frank saw it. Frank's view was skewed, as Homer is the all time loser and got that way by doing absolutely nothing. Frank was a person who worked his ass off, and got no breaks. The allegory was crude, but true.

The whole scenario of Frank Grimes' son and the prostitute "joke" exemplifies EVERYTHING that is wrong with this show and it's writers as of 2003. The best they can do is to grab something out of the past, and try to capitalize on it somehow by making a trashy joke of it.

Too bad they had to exaggerate Homer's stupidity to the point of being irritating and not in the "I can see someone doing that in real life and I hate them" sort of way. "Homer's Enemy" was one of the first episodes I really hated and I think it was a sign of how annoying they'd make a character just to appeal to little kids who would soon embrace Homer's wackiness.

Somebody needs to have more of a look at the philosophy behind the existence of The Simpsons. You may find that a little self-reflexivity and a dash of postmodern irony is one of the fundamental tenets of the show.

I completely agree. Yesterday I watched a couple of fantastic Season 3 episodes on DVD, then I switched to Fox at midnight (that's when the Simpsons are on here in Mexico) and I watched two consecutive episodes: Homer vs. Dignity and the one where Marge drives the Canyonero. What a load of fucking wank the show has become, it's such a shame. The show has become a caricature of itself and it even looks like a somewhat different show. Different in the sense that the target audience seems to be 5-10 year old kids, spotty idiotic teenagers, and retards. I can't make much of a difference between The Simpsons, Family Guy, and King of The Fucking Hill these days.

The original poster refers to a particular moment he found funny last season. I don't find anything funny about The Simpsons these days. The characters are not likeable anymore and I truly despise Homer Simpson. I'm certain that most of the people who truly enjoyed the first 4 or 5 seasons have similar views to mine: The characters are not the same they used to be, they are despicable.

Once again, I agree with the original poster. I think the show should end soon and keep some of its dignity. If there's any dignity left to be kept, in the first place...

However, not one of them proves the assertion that a show some people still enjoy should be taken away from them just because you don't care for it. Seriously. When 8 o'clock rolls around on Sunday nights, just pop in your season 3 DVD and enjoy, without giving another thought to what other people are watching.

The show has *always* been a caricature - not of itself but of American society. That the show has become a caricature of itself (as you put it) reflects the fact that most of America live their lives through the television. What people see on television becomes day-to-day life, and the Simpsons is so ingrained into pop-culture that it is now acceptable to be so self-reflexive. The map precedes the territory.

Unfortunately, almost every Simpsons episode made in the past 5 years fits that criteria.

Even the plots that are interesting like Bart and Lisa in the same class don't have the spark of earlier episodes, though I admired the intent.

You're right about the episodes of the past few years being pastiches of craziness and nothing more. It's frustrating.

Oh well, I can always watch Futurama on Adult Swim.

I live in Amish country(Lancaster, PA), so I thought the Amish building the treehouse was funny. The reason why the entire town came was because in a traditional Amish barn raising, the entire Amish community goes to the farm where the barn is being built...all the men help raise the barn, while the women prepare a feast to celebrate. its a very important social event for them.
