November 23, 2003 episode - Simpsons go to England

I thought tonight's episode was terrific. It had a coherent plot with basically one single story line. Lots of guest stars who weren't just superfluous but actually added something. Lots of great jokes. Relavence to current events. And Homer wasn't THAT stupid (hey, I can sympathize with being disoriented by a roundabout). But then the Simpsons "vacation" episodes are usally pretty good (Africa excepted). My favorite jokes: Henry Higgins and Col. Pickering kissing, and the London Eye Pod transforming into a 007 aquavehicle. And what about Homer's Step-sister...WEIRD! Dan's female British version of Homer's voice was really funny.

When Mr. Burns' $1000 bill flew through the air and landed in Bart's room, that was a little too similar to Homer's $20 bill which landed in Bart's possession in the Junior Campers episode.

I think it's safe to say this is the best episode so far this year. (Sorry, I missed the episode with Homer's mother)

In New England they call them rotaries and they are quite common. They're actually a good way to deal with traffic flow from multiple (more than four) roads. I mean, it's hard to have five or six roads meet in an intersection otherwise. Usually you can enter the rotary without stopping. Some people never figure out that traffic entering has to yield to traffic already in the rotary though. Once you're in it's easy and if you miss your exit point you just drive around again. The idea for rotaries apparently came from Europe where they are widespread. I've never seen any in the central or western U.S., they seem to be limited to the northeast mostly.

I used to live in McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey and I remember a pretty large one on the way to Fort Dix.

Actually, New Jersey has the most traffic circles of any state.

Don't ask me how or why I know that.

Coherent plot???! The whole thing with Granpa's WW2 girlfriend is forgotten until the final shot, and the interim is filled with a series of set-pieces and lame Brit cliches that were stupid back when the Bundys did it.

Ummm...whatever.

You mean the appearance by Blair?

Sigh. I guess the show will last forever as long as there's folks like you who appreciate this sort of thing.

Yeah, that's it, I HATE the show! Silly me, I simply forgot about that. Of course that must be it. There has been no decline in quality the past few seasons. I recant my prior apostasy. The Simpsons Go to England ep was another fine example of the show, and *clearly* demonstrates that there has been no, repeat NO, decline in quality or humorousness or creativity in the series. I achingly look forward to next week's episode, which no doubt will be even better. I will now go light a candle in front of my Matt Groening shrine and say ten "I didn't do it's."

I was referring to Homer's apology to the Queen, which was obviously written in at the last minute. The original storyline, which was probably written before we went to war, described Homer foiling an attempt to poison the queen. With America's current status in the world community following our war in Iraq, the Simpsons writers obviously wrote a new, clever, and heartfelt resolution to the Homer vs. The Queen plotline.

Listen man, you have some serious problems. If you hate the show so much, then STOP WATCHING IT. And stop bitching about its decline. We don't care what you think. There are millions of people who still like the Simpsons. I think it can be as funny as it ever was. Yes, there are some clunkers, but there were in Season 4 too. No show is perfect. You don't have to belittle me and imply that I am an unintelligent fan entertained by mindless comedy. I've watched the Simpsons faithfully since 1989 and I still enjoy it every bit as much as I ever did. It's pointless to whine and moan about its "decline". If you don't like it, DONT WATCH IT. And don't take your anger out on fans like me who still appreciate the Simpsons combination of wit, pop culture parody, intelligence, and mindless entertainment.
