What was intended; Hog fat joke

In the episode in which Homer and Marge are looking for a home, there visit a home near the hog rendering plant. When we see the two workers mixing the fat, one asks what is that smell.

My question is: to what is he referring? In my opinion, he is referring to hog fat, thus the joke being that you never get "used to" the smell of hog fat as the realtor had just claimed. These people have presumably worked with hog fat for years and still are not "used to" it.

Now my sister says that he is referring to Homer who is near, since there are many references in other episodes to Homer stinking. The joke being that Homer stinks so much that it is worse than hog fat, or at least stronger.

I agree, the latter.

It wouldn't make much sense for the worker to all of a sudden detect the smell of rendered fats and ask what it is...
