"Homer" on Royal Canadian Air Farce - episode available to view online

This weekend the longtime CBC comedy show _Royal Canadian Air Farce_ did a little tribute to OFF in response to a recent interview with Matt Groening, in which Matt reveals that his father was the basis for Homer - and that dad was Canadian!

we then go to an interview with "Homer Groening", played by longtime troup member Roger Abbott.

The makeup and props department did a pretty good job on this one and did their homework - the set looks like OFF's living room. and they even have a can of Duff! The makeup job on Roger was pretty good too, right down to the five o'clock shadow and the three hairs, and the right shade of blue for the pants.

The performance? Roger at least tried to get a Homer voice going, though it sounded more like Dan's original Walter Matthau inspired voice. But his "woohoo!" and "d'oh!" were pretty off. Some of the jokes could've been funnier too.

Ahhhhh... 22 minutes... where would my TV dial be without you?

I'd also like to point out, with the exception of the new guy, all the 22 minutes guys are Newfoundlanders.

I think it might've worked better if they used Don Ferguson, he could probably do the voice better. Luba couldn't do it for obvious reasons :)

It might've worked even better if they had one of their recurring guest stars play Homer - I think if Sean Cullen did it he would >kill< as Homer. (on his own show last month he did an incredible parody of William Shatner running a self-defense school). Of course, they would need better material to make it work - though it was amusing to see they tried a "Homer has conversation with his brain" joke.

Roger >can< act and be funny, he's best known for his impression of Jean Chretien, the Prime Minister, and George W. Bush, as well as characters like Billy Two -Willys. Still, the show hasn't been quite the same since John Morgan, another great comedian and the head scriptwriter, left two years ago to retire...

Or they could have gotten Rick Miller. He doesn't look a bit like Homer, but he does have the voices down pat.

Back in '97, Luba Goy visited our Fringe Festival here in Montreal, while she was doing a play as part of the Just for Laughs Festival (which didn't start till a couple of other festivals went by, but the play came early). She gave a nod in my direction when visiting the beer tent, which I thought was for me. Later, I realize it was more likely to the person I was standing next to. Rick Miller was actually in two shows that year, having done Machomer two years running.
