Help me win an argument

Yeah, I know this has been discussed before, but I'm wondering what the current attitude is.

I'm trying to prove to someone that I'm the bigger OFF geek in a trivia contest. So he tries telling me that OFF definitively live in Kentucky, because that's what they said in Behind the Laughter.

I countered that BTL wasn't canon, any more than THoHs or Gump Roast (Kang & Kodos the common thread here), or The 138th Episode Spectacular, Simpsons Bible Stories, Tales from the Public Domain, etc.

So his response was "In my simpsons books of every episode: it does state that the simpsons are from Kentucy in the DID YOU KNOW BOX! "I answered yes, i do know that the simpsons do live in kentucy." (That's a direct quote. We were actually having this argument over e-mail; so that's cut-and-pasted verbatim.)

He ended with "I see we have a difference of what we think is true and not true in some episodes," which got me wondering what anyone else thinks. Is OFF like the /Star Wars/ universe, where any piece of merchandise is canonical (in which case I suppose Threepio and Artoo are indeed gay, via crossover canon), or is it more like /Star Trek/, in that only things shown on-screen (and that don't end with a Reset Button™) count? Or is it somewhere in between? Or is everything up to Scully or Ian canon?

I've read the term "canon" being used to describe other shows, what exactly does it mean?

Basically, whatever's an official part of the show's history, or whatever's "actually" happened in the storyline. It's an adapted use of the term as it originally described the books of the bible; the canonical books being those accepted as divinely inspired scripture (as opposed to a non-canonical book, like the Gospel according to Thomas, or if you're a Protestant, any of the Apocrypha).

I've always considered that to mean North Kentucky (ie a fictional state), rather than north Kentucky. So I think he's wrong :-)

actually there are two different BTL episodes(shock and awe) in one of them it says their from north kentucky and in the other it says their from someplace else(i think it was west virginia but i cant remember)

Restricting the comments to FACTS, in cannot be argued such absolutely that OFF lives in Kentucky. Regardless of whether or not BTL is canon.

Because... they never say that OFF lives in Kentucky. Rather such that state a FACT that they are DESCRIBED as being from Kentucky, IIRC.

Bingo. The whole point of the "Kentucky" line was to illustrate the "Where do they live?" deal, and make it plainly clear that we'll never know. Hence the joke. Over the heads of some I guess.
