Omar Vizquel

I spent the last week (like everyone else here) rewatching the season 3 episodes, and found the baseball card trade that Bart makes for Millhouse pretty interesting. In the episode, Bart trades Omar Vizquel for Carl Yastrzemski. The joke is that Yastrzemski is a hall of famer, and Vizquel sucks (at the time his career AVG was about 220.) Twelve years later, it seems likely that Vizquel will be a hall of famer as well (great defensive shortstop - 9 gold gloves).

Yes, the Vizquel card was ripped, but Bart probably should have held on to it and traded Brady Anderson instead. Well, just goes to show that you never know. Well, I found it interesting, at least.

well i must agree with you. i am an avid indians fan and have been able to see in him person dozens of times and he is just amazing to watch on defense. right now he is def a borderline hall of famer. i think one more gold glove and good season at the plate will make him a lock.

that.

he's the phillies' closer. or the anglicized version, anyway. he claims he wants to kill vizquel, for some stuff he said in his book.

Joe Table(aka Jose Mesa) is terrible...I hope the Phillies have the good sense to get rid of him

I noticed the same thing. I think they chose the name "Omar Vizquel" because it sounded funny.

And as a Seattlite, the fact that Vizquel played for the Mariners probably compounded his lameness. Those weren't the days, let me tell you.

Yastrzemski was also chosen, probably because of his last name, as well his
sideburns. It wouln't have been as funny if it was a Mickey Mantle, Hank
Aaron, Frank Robinson, etc. Vizquel was also chosen for his name.
Despite his defensive prowess, Vizquel has virtually no shot at making the
HoF. Two current shortstop HoF candidates, Dave Concepcion and Alan Trammell,
both superior allaround performers than Vizquel, have come nowhere near
election to the HoF. Concepcion has received approximately 12 percent,
cumulatively, in his 10 years of eligibility. Tramell has received around 15
percent of the vote in his 2 years of elibility. 75 perecent of the vote is
required for induction into the HoF.
Vizquel, adjusted for era and park effects, is a worse hitter than Ozzie
Smith, and is also an inferior fielder and baserunner. Barry Larkin, a far
superior total player, has a 50-50 shot at making the Hall, I'd rate Vizquel
chance as less than 5.

Vizquel, to his credit, did improve offensively, taking into account park effects and increase offesnive prodction in general. However, he did not improve nearly enough to warrant anything close to serious consideration for the HoF. Anderson had the long sideburns similiar to Yaz's.

I assumed that Yastrzemski was chosen because Milhouse wanted that card so badly in Three Men and a Comic Book. For me, it's even funnier that a year previously, Milhouse really wanted that card and that's the card that Bart trades for. Either the writers really love Yaz or they were paying attention to detail (possibly both).

As for Vizquel, I assume they chose him for a couple reasons. I hadn't even heard of him, but I didn't follow baseball at all back then. His name isn't exactly common which typically equates to humor. The fact that he sucked only helped push him over the edge.

It's sort of like the Devil sending Bart back to Earth saying he won't return until the Yankees win the pennant over a century from now. Obviously, the writers missed that prediction by a couple of years.

Well, that was written when the Yankees were having that great run from 82-95.

82-93. The Yankees were leading the American League pretty easily in 1994 when the strike hit, and were a plyoff team in 1995.

Both before the episode aired, of course.

Hopefully, he is, but the fact that you actually seem to believe that Omar Vizquel has a reasonable shot at the HoF is hilarious in its own right. He won't get the requisite five percent to maintain further eligiblity and will be dropped after his initial, and only, year as a candidate on the HoF ballot. Utilizing the HOF Monitor from www.baseball-refence.com, Vizquel had a 70 entering the season, a score of >100 is considered a viable candidate for the HoF This score is actually weighed in Vizquel's favor due to the fact that park effects are not factored in and the score(of 100) has not risen, despite the increased offense of the last decade.

I should have said "potential HOFer" instead of "likely HOFer;" my bad. HOF voters don't use any mathematical formula to influence their vote - it depends on whether or not they decide to elect someone strictly on defensive ability (ignoring offensive output altogether). This scenerio may not be likely, but it has potential.

On the other hand, it is "likely" that Vizquel's number will be retired in Cleveland, which still counts for something.

Omar

But I doubt his number will be retired...if you look at who has their number retired by the Indians, they were a lot better than Omar Vizquel...He's only made the All Star game 3 times...you have to have a lot more than 3 good seasons to have a retired number/Hall of Fame career..He's a good defensive player, but if you look at the numbers and compare them with Cal Ripken/Ozzie Smith, etc, you'll see that he pales in comparison...(especially when you factor in Cal's offensive stats).

The Indians were an unstoppable force in the AL central from 95 - 2001, and went to the World Series in 95 and 97; someone from that era will have his number retired. It would probably have been Thome, but he bailed out. Vizquel has been a fan favorite in Cleveland since he joined the team in 93.

Okay, I take that back...you're right...Omar has been a Cleveland mainstay during the good years...the team probably will honor him...(but it seems a little odd that Tris Speaker and Napoleon LaJoie don't have retired "numbers" ala Ty Cobb)...
