SIMPSONS STAMPS INFORMATION The Simpsons stamps will be released this Thursday, in "Springfield, USA" - actually, in Los Angeles; the post office for the listed ZIP code is 7001 South Central Avenue, but the official "first day of issue" ceremony will be at Fox Studios on Thursday at 11:15 AM.

Also, if you're wondering what artist did such an off-model job with the stamps (for example, Bart's hair has 7 spikes, while Maggie's has 9), the USPS philatelic catalog says that Matt Groening himself drew them.

Or maybe they've declared some room of a building "Springfield" so they can properly cancel the stamps. Kind of like how "Santa's Workshop" in upstate New York gets to be "North Pole, NY" for the purposes of the little post office there, even if it's really within the realm of a real town. I hope they don't include "California" on the cancellation, that would ruin things.

I wouldn't be surprised if a number of people send stamped envelopes to the postmasters at each Springfield in the USA that has a post office, so they can have a set of the stamps postmarked from each Springfield (I assume post offices will still do this - you mail the envelope inside of another envelope, and they will mail the "inner" envelope, with the postmark, back to you).

A preliminary count shows 30 Springfields in the USA with ZIP Codes (there is also a Springfield, TX, but the USPS says it is "unacceptable" for ZIP 75853).

I rechecked the count - 22 Springfields have "full" Post Offices; another two have ZIP Codes but only for Post Office boxes (I think it's a USPS version of something like "Mail Boxes Etc." - sometimes they have their own 5-digit ZIP because every Post Office Box has its own 9-digit ZIP - and it may not have its own postmark), and Springfield, Michigan's Post Office is "officially" in Battle Creek (which is what its postmark might say). I'll have the list in my next STUFF post.

As was mine; Springfield is served by the Battle Creek post office. If there ever was a separate post office for Springfield, it's been gone for many years. So I can assure you that there isn't a postmark for Springfield, MI.
