For #5, if you listen to the director's commentary on Season 2 DVD, they say that even then, there were two distinct plots (at least), one to get to the end of the first act (their words not mine) and then another to finsih it up

All the episodes of season one did. When the pacing started to quicken, that's when they started introducing subplots to fill out the time.

Even as I was writing my one line of insight I was wondering if maybe more if not all of season one was single plot. Still I doubt there are many people that prefer season 1 to season 2.
