When a bathtub in draining, you get that little whirlpool just over the drain. I always thought its direction depended on the Coliolis effect.

In LARGE water systems, like whirlpools and stuff, or even stuff like hurricanes, they go backwards - but the coriolis effect is too weak on something like a toilet bowl, so it depends on how the bowl is formed.

I live in Australia.
I don't know about your toilets, but ours don't swirl. They just flush...... In fact, I've never seen a toilet that swirls (except in that episode).
We don't wear hats on our feet (except on National Wear Your Hat On Your Feet Day - March 16) and hamburgers don't eat people (often).
There's a lot of crap said about Australia..... We actually don't have koala's & kangaroos hopping around the streets... in fact the only place you'll probably ever see them if you live in a city like Sydney or Melbourne is in a zoo.
Although u gotta watch out for those wombats. They'll damn near maul you to death if he doesn't like the look of you... (if you believe that, you'll believe anything).......

if u were to say anything about aussies, it would have to be that most of them are stupid...... my city (pop. 300,000+) is mostly made up of people that think it's ok to compare ourselves with New York and the like and think we're actually a terrorist target..... it's a fucking joke.......

Why would you think that? (Is that a bad thing?) You have to remember that most of our (good) TV here is american (Friends, Malcolm in the Middle, Frasier, that sot of thing...) so a lot of us are very americanised...... - especially younger people (i'm 19).......

I was at a hotel in Sydney about a month ago, and the sink drained counter-clockwise "just like in the northern hemisphere". (Somebody else pointed out that the toilets don't swirl; none of the toilets I used in Australia swirled - instead, relatively massive amounts of water come out from under the rim from all directions.)
I've seen it happen in bathtubs. I mean, a super huge whirlpool doesn't form, but you can see slightly moving in the direction it's supposed to.
