how come all the americans on tv are across the board beautiful and thin (female) or incredibly buffed up (male) but when you go over there everyone is fat?

Hmmm.... not really sure...

How come all the europeans on tv seem really sophisticated and refined but when you go over there everyone is dirty, smelly, obnoxious eurotrash?

Peter Hewitt-DuttonAndy

Only 20% of Americans have a passport, amazing.

"Andy" wrote in message news:[email]...

Chris ®Peter Hewitt-Dutton

Most don't need one. We are a large country. If my country was smaller than an American state, then I'm sure more of us would have passports.

The U.S. is still the #1 destination for world tourism.

True, it is a big country, but so is Canada who has a much larger percentage of passport ownership.

It's so popular with tourists because of America's complete domination of Youth Culture, and not much else.

Much of Canada is uninhabitable and it has a very limited diversity of climate. There's less to do within it's borders.

If believing that gets you through the night, more power to you.

That's because of all the Canadians desperate to leave their squalid country.

but

did he? i think you'll find (this is to thomas, as well) that people being dirty, smelly and obnoxious is a worldwide problem. if you're going to deny that the US has one of the largest, if not THE largest, problems with obesity out of any country in the world then there's not much point in debating the issue with you.

the correct answer was, of course, that only the most beautiful people get put on tv. i merely brought it up because it's weird that from the news broadcasts, tv shows and films you could get the idea that nobody in america was fat at all, whereas in fact (etc). it's like a weird alternate america.

your ingenius and incisive stabs at the continent next to which my island is currently situated are much appreciated, though.

How come the Europeans are smart enough to let their women, gorgeous and otherwise, go topless at the beach, and we prudes over here clothe them?

Because breasts are more sexualized in the U.S.

Not every European beach allows that. There is no law in the state of New York which prevents a woman from going topless in public. Custom usually overshadows actual law.

I've just got back from the states, and if we are having a go at US tv, just be thankful we don't get adverts like they do, be thankful we have laws the limit the number of adverts that can be shown on tv. Try watching a film on network tv in the US, impossible, ad break every 6 mins, and I thought the every 30 mins or so was bad that we get!! And as for the Simpsons, if you count the ads before and after the opening credits, they get 6 ad breaks in a new episode, compared to our 3. US tv is hard work to watch!!

It's also free if you have an antenna or even a coat hanger. Brits must still pay for their TV access. The extra commercials is a trade-off. Most Americans have cable or satellite dishes, so we simply change the channel when commercials appear.

I'm sure Americans do the same (because this American does).

I'll be the first to agree that American network television sucks, filled with insipid "reality" shows and other crap geared to the lowest common denominator. I routinely watch about 5 shows on the 4 major networks. That's it.

I'll remind you that Europe is to blame for our plague of reality programs.

Hell, the UK is _directly_ responsible for American Idol.

Peter Hewitt-DuttonChris ®

Erm, no we don't!! We get 5 normal cannels free with as you put it "an antenna or even a coat hanger", we also get a much better reception from a single transmitter for all channels, instead of a different weak transmitter for each channel which you have. Also we get about 30 channels free digitally with "an antenna or even a coat hanger". Please do your research before making points. We also have alot of satalite and cable ownership. I have satalite (Sky), which is much better than yours (DirecTV, not used Dish, so sorry if it's any good). We have channels in a sensible order, a program guide that works, and a much better quality picture. Admitadly you have HDTV which we don't yet.

Pete.

What would those be? The TV license fee was still being collected in 2001:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/report2001/review/value.shtml

Never made any claims about British satellite services, nor did I claim any kind of American superiority. The rest of your complaints sounds like an uninformed diatribe. What works for you may not work in the States and vice versa.

Yes, ok, the Licence fee applies, but thats only 100/yr per household, and that gets us 7 free to air advert free tv stations, and about 50 advert free radio stations. Good value for money I'd say!

And you pay for that with ad breaks every 6 mins, I believe that was my original point. Like I said, it's hard work watching american tv, because of the number of ads. Thankfully in England we have laws on the percentage of time commercial channels can show ads, and of course the BBC is adver free, until very recently we got the simpsons without ads 5 nights a week, much better than watching it on Fox.

We're used to it.

The absurdidy of this whole argument is that you're proclaiming the superiority of British television by claiming that you can watch an American television show with fewer commercial interruptions. I'm sure Brits watch a lot more of American television than we do of yours. I'm sure they can enjoy every gripping moment of Survivor, Friends and the Super Bowl with fewer commercials. All hail the supremacy of British television.
